Spike (Software Development)
In Agile Software Development, a spike is a specific type of User Story used for research, exploration, and the reduction of technical or functional risk. The concept was introduced by Ward Cunningham as part of the Extreme Programming methodology. According to the Agile Alliance (Source: Agile Alliance Glossary), a spike is employed when a team cannot estimate a task because the underlying requirements or technologies are not well understood.
Types of Spikes
Spikes are categorized into two primary forms. A Technical Spike is used to investigate implementation details, such as evaluating a new Database Management System or testing an API integration. A Functional Spike is used to explore how a feature should behave, often involving User Experience research or Prototyping. The Scaled Agile Framework (Source: SAFe) notes that all spikes should be time-boxed to ensure the Scrum Team remains productive and focused.
