FLINT is a variety of CHERT that occurs as a hard, sedimentary cryptocrystalline form of the mineral QUARTZ. It is primarily found as nodules in sedimentary formations like CHALK and LIMESTONE. Its distinctive conchoidal fracture pattern makes it ideal for KNAPPING, a technique used since the STONE-AGE to produce STONE-TOOLS. Detailed geological descriptions of this SILICA-based rock can be found at Geology.com.
During the BRONZE-AGE and into the modern era, FLINT was valued for its ability to generate sparks. This led to its use in FIRE-STRIKING and later in FLINTLOCK ignition systems for firearms. In a different context, the name refers to FLINT-MICHIGAN, a city in the state of MICHIGAN historically significant for its role in the AUTOMOTIVE-INDUSTRY and more recently for the FLINT-WATER-CRISIS, as reported by BBC News.
