The OAIS<\/a> is a conceptual Reference Model<\/a> for an archive, consisting of an organization of people and systems that has accepted the responsibility to preserve information and make it available for a Designated Community<\/a>. Originally developed by the CCSDS<\/a>, it was formally standardized as ISO 14721<\/a>. The model provides a comprehensive framework for Digital Preservation<\/a> and Digital Curation<\/a>, ensuring that digital assets remain accessible and understandable over long periods.<\/p> The OAIS<\/a> identifies six core functional entities necessary for repository operation: Ingest<\/a>, which handles the receipt of data; Archival-Storage<\/a>, which manages long-term bitstream preservation; Data Management<\/a>, which maintains descriptive Metadata<\/a>; Administration<\/a>, which governs the system; Preservation-Planning<\/a>, which monitors technological change; and Access<\/a>, which facilitates the retrieval of information by users.<\/p> Information within an OAIS<\/a> is encapsulated into three distinct types of packages: the SIP<\/a> (Submission Information Package) provided by the producer, the AIP<\/a> (Archival Information Package) maintained within the archive, and the DIP<\/a> (Dissemination Information Package) delivered to the consumer.
