Originally a dairy farm, it was transformed into a prolific filming location for Western-Films after being purchased by George-Spahn in 1948. The ranch featured various sets including a western town and stables, which appeared in television series such as Bonanza and The-Lone-Ranger. Detailed historical records of the ranch's cinematic contributions are maintained by the Los Angeles Times.

The location is most widely recognized for its association with Charles-Manson and the Manson-Family. In 1968, the group moved onto the ranch, where they lived until their arrest following the Tate-LaBianca-Murders in 1969. George-Spahn, who was 80 years old and blind at the time, permitted the group to reside there rent-free in exchange for labor and daily assistance. The ranch served as the backdrop for the family's communal lifestyle and the development of Manson's apocalyptic philosophy.
