This concept was famously defined in the Brundtland Report, a document published by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987. Since then, the term has evolved to encompass a broad range of environmental, social, and economic factors, often referred to as the Triple Bottom Line.

To guide global efforts, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals address global challenges including poverty, inequality, Climate Change, and environmental degradation. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, these goals serve as a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.

Environmental sustainability focuses on maintaining Biodiversity and the health of global Ecosystems. This requires a rapid transition from fossil fuels to Renewable Energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal power. Furthermore, the shift toward a Circular Economy—a model that emphasizes reusing, repairing, and recycling materials—is essential for reducing the human footprint on Earth. Scientific consensus from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes that urgent action is needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate disruption.

Social and economic sustainability are equally critical. This involves ensuring Social Equity, human rights, and fair labor practices across global supply chains. When corporations adopt Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) criteria, they align their business models with long-term ecological and societal health rather than short-term profit alone.

RENEWABLE-ENERGY

CIRCULAR-ECONOMY

CLIMATE-CHANGE

SOCIAL-EQUITY

",
