Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Technology

A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is a non-volatile Data Storage device that employs Magnetic Storage to store and retrieve digital information. Developed by IBM in 1956 with the release of the IBM 305 RAMAC, the technology has evolved from room-sized units to compact 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors.

The internal architecture consists of circular Platters made of glass, ceramic, or aluminum, coated with a thin layer of magnetic material. These platters spin at high speeds, commonly 5,400 or 7,200 RPM. An Actuator moves the Read-Write Head across the surface to access specific Sectors. Communication with the Motherboard is typically handled via the SATA or SAS interface.
