Understanding Vector Embeddings
Vector Embeddings are a sophisticated method of representing data—such as text, images, audio, or video—as points in a continuous, high-dimensional vector space. By converting discrete information into numerical vectors, Artificial Intelligence systems can mathematically measure the semantic relationship between different entities. This process is central to the functionality of Deep Learning models and modern Natural Language Processing pipelines.
How They Work
In a typical embedding space, items with similar meanings or features are positioned closer to one another. For instance, in a word embedding space created by Word2Vec or GloVe, the words 'king' and 'queen' will have a smaller Euclidean distance or higher Cosine Similarity than the words 'king' and 'apple'. These embeddings are often generated using Neural Networks that learn to predict the context of a data point during training. According to Pinecone, these representations capture latent features that are not explicitly defined in the raw data.
Applications and Storage
The rise of Large Language Models like GPT-4 and BERT has significantly increased the demand for efficient management of these vectors. Specialized Vector Databases such as Milvus and Weaviate are used to index and search through millions of embeddings in real-time. This technology powers Semantic Search, Recommendation Systems, and anomaly detection. Technical deep dives on embedding math are available via Google Research.
