Understanding Jaeger

Jaeger is an open-source, end-to-end distributed tracing system used for monitoring and troubleshooting complex Microservices environments. Originally developed by Uber Technologies, it was later donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and has since become a graduated project.

Core Capabilities

The primary purpose of Jaeger is to provide visibility into the flow of requests across different services. It excels at root cause analysis, service dependency mapping, and performance/latency optimization. By implementing Distributed Tracing, developers can visualize the entire lifecycle of a request as it traverses various components of a Cloud Native architecture.

Architecture and Components

The Jaeger architecture consists of several key components:

Integration and Standards

Jaeger is fully compatible with the OpenTelemetry standard, which is the industry successor to OpenTracing and OpenCensus. This ensures that organizations can adopt a vendor-neutral approach to Observability.
