The-Tor-Project

The The-Tor-Project is a Massachusetts-based 501(c)(3) research-education nonprofit organization that maintains the Tor-Network. Founded in 2006 by computer scientists Roger-Dingledine and Nick-Mathewson, the organization focuses on providing tools for Online-Anonymity and bypassing Internet-Censorship. The core technology, Onion-Routing, was developed in the mid-1990s by employees of the United-States-Naval-Research-Laboratory, including Paul-Syverson, to protect U.S.-Intelligence communications. According to the official history, the project transitioned into a community-led effort in the early 2000s with support from the Electronic-Frontier-Foundation.
