Trace-Viewer

Trace-Viewer is a high-performance visualization tool designed for analyzing execution traces. It is most commonly recognized as the underlying engine for chrome://tracing, a built-in utility within the Chrome Browser. Developed as part of the Chromium project, Trace-Viewer allows developers to record and inspect the activity of all processes, threads, and events occurring within the browser and the underlying operating system.

The tool is a core component of the Catapult project, which provides a suite of performance analysis tools. Trace-Viewer operates by consuming data in the Trace Event Format, a JSON-based specification that captures precise timing information for various tasks. Detailed documentation on the project's architecture can be found on its official GitHub repository. It is particularly effective for diagnosing issues related to the Blink Rendering Engine, V8 JavaScript Engine, and GPU Acceleration.

According to Chromium.org, Trace-Viewer is essential for identifying jank, latency, and resource contention. While Perfetto has been introduced as a more modern, system-wide tracing solution, Trace-Viewer remains the primary interface for many web developers focusing on frontend performance. It enables the inspection of Main Thread activity, Garbage Collection cycles, and Network-Activity in a synchronized timeline.
