Understanding Biodiversity
Biodiversity, or Biological-Diversity, refers to the vast variety of life on Earth. It encompasses every living organism, from the smallest bacteria to the largest mammals. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it is the web of life that provides us with essential services like food, clean water, and medicine. Scientists typically categorize this variety into three distinct levels: Genetic-Diversity, Species-Diversity, and Ecosystem-Diversity.
The health of our planet depends on the resilience of these systems. However, Human-Activity is currently driving a rapid decline in populations. Major threats identified by the UN Environment Programme include Habitat-Loss, Climate-Change, and Pollution. Protecting Endemic-Species and maintaining Ecological-Balance are critical for the survival of Nature and the stability of the global economy.
