FIDE
The FIDE, or the International Chess Federation, is the international organization that connects various national chess federations and serves as the governing body of international Chess competition. Founded in Paris, France, on July 20, 1924, its motto is 'Gens una sumus', meaning 'We are one people'. It was one of the first modern international sports federations.
Functions and Responsibilities
FIDE is responsible for defining the rules of Chess, calculating the Elo-Rating-System for players, and awarding international titles such as Grandmaster, International Master, and FIDE Master. The federation organizes major global events, most notably the World Chess Championship, the Women's World Chess Championship, and the biennial Chess Olympiad.
Governance and Recognition
In 1999, FIDE was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Federation. The organization is currently headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. The current president is Arkady Dvorkovich, who took office in 2018, succeeding Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
