FLIT
FLIT is a minimalist tool for packaging PYTHON software. It focuses on providing a simple way to create and upload packages to the PYTHON-PACKAGE-INDEX. Developed by THOMAS-KLUYVER, it was one of the first systems to adopt PEP-517, enabling a transition away from SETUPTOOLS. It is primarily used for projects consisting of pure PYTHON code, as it does not include support for C-EXTENSIONS.
The tool relies on the PYPROJECT-TOML configuration file to handle project metadata, adhering to the PEP-621 specification. As noted in the official documentation, FLIT is part of the PYTHON-PACKAGING-AUTHORITY (PyPA). Its design has influenced other modern tools such as POETRY and HATCH. Source code and issue tracking are hosted on GitHub.
Developers typically use FLIT to generate WHEEL files and source distributions. It remains a preferred choice for those seeking a lightweight alternative to TWINE for publishing.
