Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)

Amazon Web Services (AWS) RDS is a managed database service that simplifies the setup, operation, and scaling of relational databases in the Cloud. It eliminates much of the administrative burden associated with database management by automating tasks such as Backups, software Patching, and hardware provisioning.

Supported Database Engines

The service supports several popular engines, allowing users to leverage existing tools and applications. These include MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database, and SQL Server. Additionally, Amazon Aurora is available as a high-performance, cloud-native option compatible with MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Key Features and Architecture

To ensure high availability and data durability, RDS offers Multi-AZ deployments, which replicate data across multiple Availability Zones. For read-heavy applications, Read Replicas can be used to offload traffic from the primary instance. Security is integrated through VPC for network isolation and IAM for access control. Performance monitoring is facilitated via CloudWatch.
